Personal Learning Goals

Over the past year I've become much more comfortable with using technology professionally. The past few months have provided me with multiple opportunities to develop audition videos for coworkers, create digital projects for my college courses, and use a variety of programs to support a newfound managerial position. I found that most Internet technologies can be easily used by most people because they are designed in a way which allows people of all abilities to succeed. I have no knowledge of coding or engineering, but today's programs are built so that the average user does not need to have extensive knowledge Internet programming. I believe this is an important message to pass on to my students, and I hope to do that. By putting in the effort to produce something you are proud of and paying attention to instructions, anyone can use technology professionally. Technological resources are beneficial to everyone and can be mastered by anyone.
As a teacher, I hope to instill a sense of digital responsibility, ethics, and appreciation. I hope to learn new and innovative ways to include various forms of technology in my classroom both instructionally and professionally. My most important goal is to leave my students with a sense of personal achievement and an eagerness to learn more about how they can use technology in the future.

Personal Learning Goals:
  1. To learn more about resources for students with disabilities to help differentiate instruction and accommodate individual needs
  2. To develop a digital portfolio of instructional and professional resources
  3. To gain an understanding a various programs and technologies that can be used everyday in the classroom
  4. To educate students on how to use technology responsibly and ethically
  5. To provide students with opportunities to use technology creatively and originally
  6. To learn methods in which technology can be seamlessly added into instructional time

  1. Rachel, I agree that in today's society, technology is designed to be accessible and will lead to success for people of all abilities. It is definitely encouranging to log on to a website and find tutorials, or contact information should someone need assistance. Also, like you, I have no knowledge of coding or anything to that degree, and thus consider myself to be of the average technological skill level, but lucky for us ( and our students) we have no need to hone those skills due to the ease of access now provided. Also, we share several of the same goals for our future classroom and students, namely differentiating instruction with the use of technology. Overall, I definitely agree with your standpoint on these issues at hand, and feel that over the course of the semester our needs will be met!

  2. Hi Rachel !

I agree with everything that you stated, especially about instilling the the sense of responsibility, ethics and appreciation for technology. I believe that all students should be exposed to using technology as an outlet to be creative and as a tool for learning various things. Educators can serve as a guide for building a student's knowledge of technology. Some of our personal goals are similar, such as differentiating for students with disabilities, and gaining knowledge about different portals that will enhance our instruction.

  3. I love your 5th personal learning goal, "To provide students with opportunities to use technology creatively and originally". I never thought of this and this is very important because there are so many technologies that don't allow students to be creative and original. An example being facebook which almost everyone knows about or uses by now. I think things like twitter, tumblr, even pinterest can help you achieve this goal because those apps allow you to put your own creative ideas into your posts. Facebook basically allows oyu to put your two cents in before posting a link.
P.S pinterest is like my favorite one :)

  4. I agree with Rachel and Ashley, on learning goal of using technology creatively and originally. Like Ashley said, it is true that so many technologies don't allow students to be creative and original. They usually get information and just apply to their work without knowing what they are doing because it was just there. I want to learn also how to use technology creatively and originally so students can problem solve and create their own work based on what they've learn using technology.

  5. Hi Rachel,

I love your comment about using technology ethically. Technology can sometimes seem so impersonal and allows people to maintain a degree of anonymity, that issues such as cyber bullying and plagiarism are more rampant than ever before. I love the idea that it is the teacher's responsibility to not only teach content, but also ethical use of technology.

  7. Hi Rachel!

Carline's comment said everything I was thinking! Your note about "To educate students on how to use technology responsibly and ethically" is really such a powerful and important thing to remember. Cyber bullying is real issue, and to teach student about being responsible on the internet has to now be integrated into learning about a school community.

  8. Digital responsibility and ethics are great lessons to be taught in school, especially because we live in such a technology centered world that revolves around the internet. Everything has benefits and draw-backs and it's important that we exercise with caution.
